Update

Hallo zusammen!
Es fiel mir lange schwer die richtigen Worte zu finden. Es ist so viel passiert in den letzten Wochen. Hier ist eine kurze Zusammenfassung. Eines Tages kam ich aus dem Fitnessstudio nach Hause und hatte eine Nachricht von einer 470er-Steuerfrau , die gerade vor einem Monat die Auswahl für die Olympischen Spiele in Tokio verloren hatte und mich fragte, ob wir uns mal unterhalten könnten. Ich kannte sie kaum und war total verliebt ins Shorthand-Offshore-Segeln und gerade dabei, eine reine Frauen-Crew für die diesjährige Regatta rund um die dänische Insel Bornholm aufzubauen. Ich dachte: „Vielleicht will sie jetzt auch ins Offshore-Segeln einsteigen“! Nun, das war nicht ganz das, worauf sie abzielte – sie fragte mich, ob ich mit ihr ein Team bilden und 49er Fx segeln wolle. Um ehrlich zu sein, war ich noch nicht so überzeugt, als wir am Telefon sprachen, aber ich war neugierig. Also einigten wir uns darauf, uns ein langes Wochenende zu nehmen und es auszuprobieren. Und wow! Wir haben uns sehr gut verstanden! Ich habe schon mit ein paar anderen Steuerleuten auf dem 49er Fx herumprobiert, aber ich muss sagen, dass es mit Nadi anders war. Es gab diesen sofortigen Kommunikationsfluss, viel Respekt von beiden Seglern für den anderen und wir waren auf der gleichen Wellenlänge. Wie hätte ich ihr Angebot nicht annehmen und diese Chance ergreifen können?

Was für ein Dilemma. Einerseits ist da diese begeisterte Frau, die mit mir segeln will, andererseits hatte ich meine bereits seit einem Jahr bestehende Olympia-Kampagne mit Max im Mixed Offshore Keelboat, und wir hatten schon einiges aufgebaut. Und ich glaube, es gibt niemanden im olympischen Segelsport, der sagen würde, dass man zwei Olympia-Kampagnen auf einmal machen kann – vor allem, wenn es einen riesigen Technik-Nachholbedarf im 49er Fx gibt. Was sollte ich also tun?
Nun, das IOC hat mir die Entscheidung leicht gemacht. Am 11. Juni haben sie Mixed Offshore aus dem olympischen Programm für 2024 gestrichen – so dass ich nur noch eine Kampagne hatte: 49er Fx segeln mit Nadi. Natürlich war ich erleichtert. Hättest du in meiner Situation eine Entscheidung treffen können, ohne sie später irgendwie doch ein bisschen zu bereuen? Ich bezweifle es.

Aber ich liebe auch immer noch das Offshore-Segeln. Und ich denke, dass das IOC mit dem Rauswurf dieser Disziplin eine große Chance verpasst hat. Segeln ist meine Leidenschaft, und als ich letztes Jahr anfing, Offshore-Regatten zu segeln – nur weil es bei den Olympischen Spielen dabei sein sollte -brachte das diese Leidenschaft auf eine ganz neue Ebene. Es zeigte mir diese Welt voller Möglichkeiten und dass es möglich sein könnte, mit Segeln seinen Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen – oder zumindest eine Hybridkarriere.
Aber ich weiß auch, woher ich komme. Und das ist das Jollensegeln in meinem Heimatverein in Niedersachsen, um dann später im Kieler Internat zu lernen, was es heißt, Leistungssportler im Segeln zu sein. Und ja, der Wunsch, in einer dieser Klassen zu brillieren und eine olympische Medaille zu gewinnen, steckt immernoch in mir.
Mein Fokus wird für die nächsten 3 Jahre bei den Skiffs liegen, aber ich werde nicht lange aus der Offshore-Segelwelt verschwinden. Ein Event steht dieses Jahr noch an: Ich werde mit drei großartigen Frauen Rund Bornholm segeln. Und Anfang des Jahres wurde ich als Navigator auf einer Clubswan 50 angeheuert, um mit ihnen ein paar Regatten zu segeln! Wie aufregend!
Unser Ziel ist es, diese Kampagne im 49er Fx so clever, effizient, spaßig und natürlich erfolgreich zu machen, wie wir es in dieser kurzen Zeit schaffen können. Wir bringen unsere beiden Erfahrungen aus unseren völlig unterschiedlichen Hintergründen zusammen und werden versuchen, die perfekte Olympia-Kampagne aufzubauen. Und in drei Jahren? Wer weiß das schon? Im Idealfall halte ich dann eine Medaille in der Hand, bereit, jede Herausforderung anzunehmen, die die Offshore-Segelwelt zu bieten hat.

Aber bis dahin lade ich jeden von euch ein, Nadi und mich auf unserer Reise zu begleiten. Es wird ein Unterstützerprogramm mit vielen coolen Features geben, also bleibt auf dem Laufenden. Hello Everyone,
I was struggling to write. So much has happened in the last weeks. Here is a brief summary. One day I came home from the gym and found a message from a 470 helm who had just lost the selection for the Tokyo Olympic Games a month ago asking me if we could have a chat. I barely knew her and totally into shorthanded offshore sailing at the time and into setting up an all-female crew for this year’s race round the Danish island Bornholm, I thought “Maybe she wants to get into Offshore sailing now too”! Well, that wasn’t quite what she was aiming at – she asked if I wanted to team up with her and sail 49er Fx. To be honest I wasn’t that convinced yet when we talked on the phone but I was curious. So we agreed to pick a long weekend and try it out. And wow! We got along very well! I have already been trying out with a few different helms on the 49er Fx but I had to say that with Nadi it was different. There was this immediate flow of communication, a lot of respect from both sailors towards the other and being on the same wavelength. Was there any scenario in which I could not take up her offer and grab this opportunity?
What a predicament. Here I have this enthusiastic woman who wants to sail with me, there I have my already existing Olympic Campaign with Max in the Mixed Offshore Keelboat which was already going on for a year and we had already built quite something. And I don’t think there is anyone in Olympic sailing who would say that you can do two Olympic Campaigns at once – especially if there is a huge amount of catching up to be done in the 49er Fx. What should I do?

Well, the IOC made my decision easy. On 11th of June, they kicked Mixed Offshore out of the 2024 Olympic programme – leaving me with only one campaign: Sailing the 49er Fx with Nadi. Of course, I felt relieved. Could you have made a decision in my situation without any regrets about it later on? I doubt it.

But I also still love Offshore sailing. And I do think that the IOC missed a big opportunity in kicking this discipline out. Sailing is my passion and when I started sailing offshore regattas last year this time around – only because it was going to be in the Olympics – it took this passion to another level. It showed me this world of opportunities and that it might be possible to make a living with it – or at least a hybrid career! 😉
But I also remember where I came from. And that’s sailing dinghies at my local Club in lower saxony, then later learning what it means to be a pro athlete in sailing at the Kiel boarding school. And yes, there is still a desire for me to excel in one of these classes and win an Olympic medal.

My focus will be with skiffs for the next 3 years but I will not be gone for long from the offshore sailing world. There is still one event to be done this year: I will sail with three awesome women around Bornholm. And earlier this year I was hired to be the navigator on a Clubswan 50 and sail a few regattas with them! How exciting!

Our aim is to make this campaign in the 49er Fx as smart, efficient, fun and obviously successful as we can in this short time. We are bringing together both our experiences from our totally different backgrounds and will try to build the perfect Olympic Campaign. And in three years’ time? Who knows? Ideally, I will hold a medal in my hand, ready to take on any challenge that the Offshore sailing world will offer.
