Eine Seite aussegeln

Der erste Teil der Regatta war eine Kreuz. In meinem Segler-Leben bin ich schon viele Kreuzen gesegelt und meistens musste man sich schon vorher überlegen, welche Seite  bevorteilt ist. Hat man sich einmal für eine Seite entschieden, sollte man auch zu seiner Entscheidung stehen und nicht auf halbem Wege versuchen doch auf die andere Seite zu fahren. Dann muss man nämlich durch die Mitte. Und vor allem in einer 70-Boote-Laserflotte ist, wenn man nicht gerade unter den Top Ten ist, in der Mitte solch eine Windabdeckung, dass man kaum auf der anderen Seite ankommt. Der beste Weg ist fast immer, die eigene Seite auszufahren und zu versuchen von den Booten dort als erstes anzukommen. Meistens kommen nämlich auch die ersten drei der schlechteren Seite noch in den Top Ten an der Luvtonne an. Im Offshore ORC Segeln gilt dasselbe, nur dass die Boote meist unterschiedlich schnell an der Kreuz sind (entsprechend ihrer Rumpflänge = Rumpfgeschwindigkeit). Und es kommt noch eine Klitzekleinigkeit dazu nämlich, dass man lange Strecken segelt und dort evtl. auch mal eine Insel im Weg ist. Dann muss man sich sowieso entscheiden, an welcher Seite man die Insel passiert und kann dann wirklich nicht auf halber Strecke nochmal seine Meinung ändern.

Wir mussten uns entscheiden, ob wir um Fehmarn herum oder unter der Brücke durch segeln wollten und peilten nach Rücksprache mit einem Profi-Navigator wegen eines erwarteten Rechtsdrehers den Fehmarnsund an. Schon am Anfang der Kreuz hielten wir uns rechts vom Feld und lagen auch nach dem Fehmarnsund weiterhin rechts von den Booten, die außen um die Insel herumgefahren waren. Als der Rechtsdreher dann kam, zahlte sich unser Spieleinsatz und die Geduld aus. Diese Erfahrung ist vielleicht auch fürs Segeln um Tonnen gut. Nächstes Mal stelle ich mir einfach vor, da ist eine Insel in der Mitte der Kreuz, weswegen ich konsequent auf der Seite bleiben muss, für die ich mich vorher entscheide.

I originally wanted to write a detailed report about my first offshore regatta, but you can already find one on our team Instagram and Facebook page. Instead, I want to point out and share some major experiences I have made during the race.

Playing one side of the upwind

The first part of the regatta was an upwind. In my sailing career I have already sailed many upwinds and most of the time I had to think beforehand which side would be favoured. Once you have chosen one side, you should hold on to your decision and do not try to go to the other side halfway into the game. Because then you will have to go through the middle. And especially in a 70-boats laser fleet, if you’re not in the top ten, there’s such a wind cover in the middle that you will hardly make it to the other side. The best way is almost always to stay where you are and try and win the side that you’re at. Most of the time, the top three of the disadvantaged side will still arrive in the top ten at the top mark. In offshore ORC sailing the same applies, but the boats are usually sailing at different speeds upwind due to the differences in hull length. Also there is a small matter of the fact that you sail long distances and there may also be an island in the way. You have to decide which side you wanna pass the island and then you really won’t be able to change your mind halfway.

We had to decide whether we wanted to sail around the island of Fehmarn or under the bridge that connects it with the mainland and after consulting with a professional navigator we targeted the Fehmarnsund because we could expect a right-hander. At the beginning of the upwind we tried to stay to the right of the fleet and after the Fehmarnsund we were still to the right of the boats that had driven around the outside of the island. When the right-hander came, our plan and patience paid off. This experience is perhaps also good for sailing around marks. Next time I just imagine there is an island in the middle of the upwind, so I have no other option but to stay on the side I choose before the start.
