2018 war einfach unglaublich! Die Europameisterschaft in La Rochelle gab mir einen riesigen Motivationsschub noch einmal im Laser so richtig durchzuziehen, um mich bei der Kieler Woche für die World Sailing Weltmeisterschaft in Aarhus zu qualifizieren, die nur einmal alle vier Jahre stattfindet. Nachdem das nicht geklappt hatte, versuchte ich noch bei meinem Saisonhöhepunkt, der Juniorenweltmeisterschaft in Gdynia, das Kaderkriterium für die Nationalmannschaft zu erfüllen. Aufgrund einer fiesen, anhaltenden Grippe, konnte ich mein Ziel hier auch nicht erreichen. Das brachte mich dazu, nach der IDM 2017 ein weiteres Mal zu hinterfragen, ob der Laser das richtige Boot für mich ist. Meine Ziele nicht erreichen zu können, obwohl ich glaubte, alles erdenklich Mögliche getan zu haben frustrierte und stimmte mich nachdenklich.
Ich traf eine Entscheidung und wechselte die Bootsklasse. Die nationale 49er Fx Gruppe nahm mich mit offenen Armen auf und ehe ich mich versah, hatte ich die Laser EM, die ich eigentlich noch hatte segeln wollen, abgesagt und verlud einen 49er Fx, um in Marseille mit Cathie Bartelheimer an der Juniorenweltmeisterschaft der 49er teilzunehmen.
Gleichzeitig hatte ich eine Unterhaltung mit Silas Mühle, der auf der Suche nach einer Vorschoterin für seinen Nacra17 war.
Nach der WM in Marseille, die mit 4 von 5 Tagen Starkwind eine echte Herausforderung und unglaubliche Erfahrung war, hatte ich drei Tage Probetraining mit Silas auf dem fliegenden Katamaran. Danach wusste ich, der Nacra17 ist das richtige Boot für mich!
Nach etwa 2 Monaten, die ich mit Silas intensiv gesegelt bin, hat sich für mich jetzt herausgestellt, dass Silas Ansicht von professionellem Segeln und das Setup des Ipunkt Sailingteams extrem von meinen Ansichten abweichen. Und da wir trotz mehrfacher Versuche keine Annäherung erzielen konnten, haben sich unsere Wege getrennt.
Das bedeutet für mich aber natürlich nicht das Ende meiner Segelkarriere! Momentan bin ich ja noch in Australien. Meinen ursprünglich für den 29.12. gebuchten Flug habe ich auf Mitte Februar verschoben. So habe ich zwei Monate Zeit Inspiration zu sammeln und mir darüber klar zu werden, wie es seglerisch weiter gehen soll. Und wo könnte ich das besser als in Australien, der Segelnation Nummer eins?

2018 was simply incredible! The European Championship in La Rochelle gave me a bit of extra motivation to give it a go to try everything and train as hard as I could for Kiel Week which was the qualification event for the World Sailing World Championship in Aarhus (those are only every fourth year).
After not being able to qualify myself for this event I tried to qualify at least for the National Team at the U21 Worlds in Gdynia. But with being really sick I couldn’t reach my goal there as well. These incidents brought me to that point to question again (after the German Championship in 2017) if the Laser was the right boat for me. Not being able to reach my goals despite having done everything which was possible from my perspective was frustrating and made me think a bit.
I made a decision and changed the boat class. The National 49er Fx group welcomed me very warmly and so I ended up canceling the Laser Junior Europeans that I actually had wanted to attend and found myself packing up a 49er for the Junior Worlds in Marseille that I would take part in with Cathie Bartelheimer.
Meanwhile I also had a conversation with Silas Mühle who was searching for a Crew for his Nacra17 too.
After the worlds in Marseille which were a really nice experience, I had three days of practice with Silas on that flying Catamaran and after those three days I knew that this is the right boat for me!
After approximately two months of intense sailing with Silas it turned out that his and my opinion of professional sailing vary quite a bit from each other and since we couldn’t really find a compromise, even though we tried several times, we decided to go different ways and stop sailing together.
But this won’t force me to stop my Olympic Sailing Career! Currently I’m still in Australia. My flight, which actually would have been on the 29th December I postponed to mid February. So I’ve got lots of time to collect inspiration and figure out what I wanna sail in the future. And where else could be a better place for this than Australia – the number one sailing nation?
