The first two days of the laser U21 world championship are done and we have four races sailed. I always thought that Kiel was the most shifty non-lake venue to sail but actually it’s Gdynia. I’ve never seen so less sailors sailing constantly and never experienced a regatta where you could go from last to top or the other way around in most of the races or where running into the corners, until you’re on the layline, works that often.
Anyways, with the cold still hindering me from showing my full potential I just went around the race course not really recognizing what I was doing and trying to get some fresh air into my nose. At least I managed to get away with some good starts but unfortunately not all of them endet in racing but in a recall. Well, there were a lot of general recalls the last two days.
Some good moments and right decisions lead me to 34th position with a 46th, a 30th, a 29th and a 26th. That’s really not what I had expected but I hope to get better day by day, race by race. But sailing until 8pm, like we did today, doesn’t really helps to get back to my usual fitness.
Nevertheless I enjoy being back on the water and getting some racing action!

Die ersten zwei Tage der U21 WM sind geschafft und wir haben vier Rennen im Kasten. Ich dachte ja immer in Kiel hätten wir viele Dreher, aber Gdynia toppt alles. Ich habe noch nie so wenige Segler konstant segeln gesehen und noch nie erlebt, dass man in fast jedem Rennen von ganz hinten nach ganz vorne fahren konnte – oder andersherum – oder dass in die Ecke ballern, bis man auf der Layline ist, so häufig funktioniert.

Wie auch immer, da ich mit der Erkältung immernoch zu kämpfen habe, bin ich meist eher etwas benebelt um den Kurs gefahren und habe nicht immer so ganz mitgekriegt, was ich überhaupt gerade machte (meist habe ich versucht meine Nase freizubekommen).
Wenigstens hatte ich aber ein paar gute Starts, auch wenn nicht alle davon abgingen, weil wir echt viele Allgemeine Rückrufe hatten. Dadurch und mithilfe einiger guter Momente und richtiger Entscheidungen bin ich im Moment 34. mit den Plätzen 46, 30, 29 und 26. Das ist natürlich absolut nicht das, was ich hier von mir erwartet habe, aber ich hoffe, jeden Tag, Rennen für Rennen wieder zu meiner normalen Form zurückzufinden. Das ist jedoch nicht so leicht, wenn man, wie heute bis 20 Uhr auf dem Wasser ist.
Trotz allem genieße ich es, wieder auf dem Wasser zu sein und mit den besten Junioren aus aller Welt um die Wette zu segeln!
